Fact-checking the GOP’s ‘satirical’ vote-by-mail video

State election officials from both parties are expanding vote-by-mail this year to mitigate the risk of spreading the novel coronavirus. President Trump has fumed at these moves and for weeks has been spreading false information about vote-by-mail laws and safeguards, often tweeting baseless warnings about a phantom plot to steal the election.

Since polls opened early Tuesday morning, voters in Georgia — especially in and around Atlanta — have reported problems with voting machines and long lines, with some voters leaving without casting a ballot. The problems are a troubling sign for the burgeoning swing state’s ability to handle the expected high turnout for November’s presidential election.

“This is a way of discouraging people from voting,” said Harden, who is African American. “It’s unacceptable. If we’re going through this now, just think what November is going to be like.”

At the Sandtown Park and Gymnasium west of downtown Atlanta, state Rep. Roger Bruce (D) distributed masks and folding chairs for voters waiting for more than three hours because of machine delays. Among them was Raney Branch, an actress who said she was appalled by the long wait. Branch said she and many acquaintances requested but never received absentee ballots, forcing her to come out in person.
